What an eventful year 2020 has been. With forest fires, pandemics, murder hornets, and the events following the murder of George Floyd, it’s discouraging. Even more so, another punch in the gut within the black community.
A few days ago, a friend of mine and I were talking about the protest and the looting of businesses etc. And she brought up to me that in her support for the protest, she researched black owned business to make the extra effort to shop and support them. Upon her search, she made the discovery that there were very few black owned businesses in Phoenix, and if any, they were limited to Restaurants, Beauty Salons, and Beauty Stores. My question is why is that? Where are the black owned banks to loan to black startup businesses? Where are the black brokers and stock holders to help invest money on the behalf of the black community? Where are the black owned schools to help educate our young black people? Black owned clothing stores, Black owned car dealerships, Black owned auto body shops, etc. Where are you?
I find it hard to believe there aren’t educated black people in the Phoenix area who specialize in these areas. Whether male or female, I believe every crisis creates opportunity and the crisis of the lack of black owned businesses in Phoenix means the opportunity to create them. What can you contribute to your community? We all need each other to succeed.
